The extension of the existing BP service station in Mt Waverley to include a new
Hungry Jack's restaurant presented a myriad of design challenges. The original BP
was built on a small site and great care in the selection and size of building
materials was required to minimize disruptions to the operation of the service
station. This included ensuring construction materials could be stored in the
limited area available, as well as minimizing the extent of 'hot works' which would
require the station to close.
Particular attention was paid to the exact extent of the demolition works to attempt to avoid trimming steel beams and cutting concrete. Through the use of maintaining existing connections, strengthening the existing pre-cast panels and specialized steel fixings; welding was able to be avoided, enabling the service station to trade throughout the majority of the construction phase.
